Dorothy Donovan Hale was born on January 11, 1905 in Pittsburg,
Pennsylvania to Emma and James Patrick Donovan. Dorothy moved
to New York City at age Eighteen and worked as a model, dancer and
actress. In 1928, she married muralist Gardner Hale. Dorothy’s premature
and tragic death in 1938 was hauntingly memorialized on canvas by iconic
artist and friend, Frida Kahlo.
